In the pause of a gesture there might be an echo started as a transformed symposium when physical encounters became off-limits in 2020. Since then it has developed in an online space for mingling, differing, and fusing into new collaborations. The platform fosters conversations, interviews, critical and experimental writings, and interrupted and ongoing artistic processes. Our initial alliances with artistic practices with a focus on collected and protected objects, heritage and archives have evolved into an exploration of processes within artistic practices, and how these practices can become social spaces where alternative potentialities can be conceived and shaped.
Such as the ongoing research project Vragen? by Richtje Reinsma in which she explored 'the practice of asking a question' and 'the question as an instrument' in various contexts, such as everyday verbal socialising practices, education, public speaking, politics, arts, and journalism. An olfactory dialogue consisting of a 'questioning scent’ and an 'answering scent’ was developed in collaboration with scent designer Frank Bloem. An eventful interview with Frank Bloem, a probing sound art piece, and a video impression of the performance Vragen #1 are included in the collection of In the pause of a gesture there might be an echo. In her research, Richtje was accompanied by Frank Bloem, Nathalie Bruys, Roger Cremers, Reineke Jonker, Janneke Raaphorst, Jair Stein, and Luciënne Venner.
In Sarah van Lamsweerde's short film Sightless Seeing #5: Remember by Heart, we follow performer Leroy de Böck deep into the collection of the former Theater Instituut Nederland (TIN). Sightless Seeing #5: Remember by Heart was part of a tactile installation, now it is re-issued online! The film (31:46) sharpens the senses for a sensorial time travel into the past and the future. Sightless Seeing #5: Remember by Heart is a joint effort by Sarah van Lamsweerde, Leroy de Böck, Alina Ozerova, Lam Lai, Janneke Raaphorst, and theatre collection specialist at Allard Pierson Collections, Gonneke Janssen.
Anastasija Pandilovska, in her essay Façade_Override_Façade, discusses with a fellow commuter, a wedding planner and her grandmother how to move with the fluid nature of a city. In an attempt to open the public space to everyone, she addresses friction as an area of possibilities, a tool for transforming the antagonistic polarisation into an agonistic exercise of public space where a diversity of voices can come forth. Marjoca de Greef and Anastasija Pandilovska wrote a dialogue in transitive collaboration with the Toronto Research Group, examining the similar structures of collaboration and 'the act of translation.'
In The Nervous Canines, Aram Lee engages with Study of Two Brazilian Tortoises (1640), a painting by the Dutch painter Albert Eckhout. In the short film (25:03), she brings into focus the fictional teeth of the two tortoises. Although the actual tortoises are toothless, in Albert’s painting we see sharp teeth framing their mouths. In The Nervous Canines, the imagined teeth are resignified into the neurotic vowels of the tortoises and their paroxysmal movements. The Nervous Canines is a large-scale installation. Online, the film is reworked into an intimate dialogue between the tortoises.

In the pause of a gesture there might be an echo begon als een online symposium toen fysiek ontmoeten in 2020 verboden werd. Sindsdien heeft het platform zich ontwikkeld tot een online ruimte voor ontmoetingen, botsingen en nieuwe samenwerkingen. Het platform biedt ruimte aan gesprekken, interviews, kritische en experimentele teksten en onderbroken, lopende en afgeronde artistieke processen. Onze aanvankelijke aandacht voor artistieke praktijken met een focus op verzamelde en beschermde objecten, erfgoed en archieven is verschoven naar een verkenning van processen binnen artistieke praktijken, en hoe deze praktijken sociale ruimtes kunnen worden waar alternatieve mogelijkheden kunnen worden bedacht en vormgegeven.
Zoals het lopende onderzoeksproject Vragen? van Richtje Reinsma waarin zij 'de praktijk van het stellen van een vraag' en 'de vraag als instrument' onderzocht in verschillende contexten, zoals alledaagse praktijken, onderwijs, spreken in het openbaar, politiek, kunst en journalistiek. Een dialoog voor de neus bestaande uit een vragende en een antwoordende geur werd ontwikkeld in samenwerking met geurontwerper Frank Bloem. Op 15 mei zijn Vragen? #4, een interview met Frank Bloem, het geluidskunstwerk Vragen? #3 en een video-impressie van de performance Vragen? #1 opgenomen in de collectie van In the pause of a gesture there might be an echo. Sightless Seeing #5: Remember by Heart was onderdeel van een tactiele installatie, en is nu online te zien! Anastasija Pandilovska bespreekt in haar essay Façade_Override_Façade met een mede-busreiziger, een huwelijksplanner en met haar grootmoeder hoe mee te bewegen met het fluïde karakter van een stad. In een poging om de publieke ruimte van iedereen te maken, stelt ze dat conflict mogelijkheden biedt, een instrument kan zijn om polarisatie te transformeren in een strijdbare oefening in de openbare ruimte, waarbij een diversiteit aan stemmen ruimte krijgt.
Marjoca de Greef en Anastasija Pandilovska schreven een dialoog in een transitieve samenwerking met de Toronto Research Group, waarin de vergelijkbare structuren van samenwerking en vertalen worden onderzocht.
In The Nervous Canines houdt Aram Lee zich bezig met Study of Two Brazilian Tortoises (1640), een schilderij van de Nederlandse schilder Albert Eckhout. Hoewel de schildpadden in werkelijkheid tandeloos zijn, heeft Eckhout de snavelachtige bek van beide dieren versierd met een rijtje scherpe ondertanden. In The Nervous Canines bewegen de twee schildpadden, eerst traag, maar gaandeweg steeds agressiever. De imaginaire tanden krijgen opnieuw betekenis door de klaagzang van de schildpadden en hun onverwacht driftige bewegingen. The Nervous Canines is een grootschalige installatie. Online is de film omgewerkt tot een intieme dialoog tussen twee schildpadden.
